World Youth Day (WYD) is the largest youth event in the world and was held in Sydney from 15th to 20th July 2008. The Days in the Diocese program happened in regional centres throughout the country in the days preceding WYD and was designed to be a local celebration of faith, fun and culture. Organised by the Catholic Church, WYD brings together young people from around the globe to celebrate and learn about their faith. As part of the World Youth Day experience, in 2008 there was an opportunity for overseas pilgrims to be hosted in one of the dioceses around Australia. This was a time for overseas guests to experience Australian culture and to join local communities in celebrating their spirituality. The Archdiocese of Brisbane opened its homes and hearts to young over 5000 people from around the world as part of the Days in the Dioceses program. In Brisbane, the Days in the Diocese program commenced on Thursday 10th July 2008 and officially concluded on Monday 14th July 2008. International and local Pilgrims then travelled to Sydney to be part of thousands of pilgrims who celebrated World Youth Day 2008. A major highlight of Brisbane’s Days in the Diocese program, took place on Saturday 12th July, the Heart of the City event. This event drew together pilgrims, host families and the wider Catholic and Civic community into the city for an inspiring celebration of faith and life! The Days in the Dioceses was a wonderful opportunity for the youth of the world to join local communities in prayer and celebration, to experience Queensland, to help renew the Church, and to receive the gift of real Australian hospitality. Without the hospitality and generosity of local pilgrims, parishes, host families, parishes and the wider community the Archdiocese of Brisbane would not have been able to host such a wonderfully successful event.
